Advanced Ultralight Pilot Permit
This flying course is designed to provide the novice unlicenced pilot the preparation and experience needed for an advanced ultralight permit. This permit allows the pilot to fly in daytime VFR (visual flight rules) conditions in Advanced Ultralight (Light Sport) aircraft while carrying a passenger. This permit also allows the use of basic ultralights, trikes and powered parachutes, and any other aircraft that comply with the weight and speed limitations of the ultralight and advanced ultralight category.
This course consists of 20 hours of flight time and 25 hours of ground school on the following subjects:
- Aerodynamics and theory of flight
- CARS (Canadian Avation Regulations) and flight operations
- Aircraft performance
- Flight instruments
- Airframes, engines and systems
- Basic meterology and weather interpretation
- Basic navigation and flight planning
This permit requires the student to write 2 exams:
- PSTAR: Written before the first solo
- ULTRA: A comprehensive final exam consisting of questions on the topics listed above
The flight training portion of the course will comprise of the following items:

- Range, endurance and slow flight
- Speed and flap control
- Stalls, incipient spins and recovery

- Preparation for flight test

Cost
Airplane rental = $100/hr wet
Instructor fee = $40 /hr
Average cost for the whole course based on the average time to completion is $2800-$3500 (+$350-$450 in taxes). There is an additional fee for the flight test and any additional training the student requires beyond the average completion time.
